Stop Talking Smack About Yourself

Stop Talking Smack About Yourself...What you say to yourself you'd never dare say to a good friend. ~Jen Coken

I used to be the queen of making negative comments about myself. Kind of a weird thing given I’d been coaching other people to stop doing that for years.

But you don’t always realize what you are saying to yourself until someone else you are living with hears you and addresses it.

How to Quiet the Ego Voice

Hush Now

When we’re unconscious or not as aware as we can be, our ego will typically try to grab control of any process we’re working on. Sometimes that serves us, but most times it doesn’t—because the ego is pretty defensive and aggressive.

Here’s a quick grid that illustrates the contrast in the ways we talk to ourselves when our ego is driving vs. when our deeper, more authentic self is driving:

It's OK to Make Nice With Yourself

Guess what? It’s okay to have some positive thoughts about yourself.

Many of us were raised in intellectual households, where if you couldn’t prove your point, well, you were just being delusional. I’m asking you to be a little delusional. You may be reluctant to think nice thoughts about yourself. I understand. You may feel that your negative thoughts “keep you in line” and you don’t want to “get a big head.”

Darling, you will not get a big head. I promise.

An Ode to the Overwhelmed

And as you stand there

Late again

Because you forgot to allow time to park
And the elevator was slow

And you left 10 minutes late to begin with
With your shoes that pinch

And your pants that are a little too small
Since you started eating white bread again

And as you paw through your bag
Looking for the suite number
That you’re not sure you wrote down to begin with

Let us now praise you.

You, the untidy.
You, the careless.

You, the easily distracted by sparkly things.
