Surrendering and Resilience

Surrender and resilience are both words that come up frequently in my line of work. As a social worker, mental health professional, and employee assistance provider the meaning of resilience and the art of fostering resilience is woven into so many of my days. At first thought, resilience is about strength, hardiness, steadiness, ability to withstand pressure. During an exquisite Yin Yoga session, the concept of surrendering flooded my mind as the instructor urged us to settle into the pose, surrender to gravity, and allow your body to go where it needs to be.

Is Saturated Fat Bad For You?

Since the days when our ancestors were living in caves, gathering food and hunting wild animals, saturated fats have played a part in our diet.

In the latter half of the last century, saturated fats were reviled as one of the worst things in the world. They were thought to cause high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, and heart disease, as well as being a contributory factor to diabetes.

Recently, the tables have turned yet again. New research has revealed many surprising health benefits.

Yoga is Not Hard

Ohm or Ouch?

When I meet someone who is new to yoga and they learn that I am a teacher, they always say the same thing: "I went to a yoga class and it was really hard." While it's encouraging that so many people are trying yoga, that their early experiences always feel like "hard work" is unfortunate. Setting this precedent becomes the basis for many of the pitfalls that beset practitioners today.

Are You a Balanced Person?

Advertising gurus know how to use imagery to create associations and a precedent of thought that steer behavior. As yoga has grown into a common pop-culture reference, the image of someone executing balance poses has become the symbol of one's steadiness in life.  But many are learning the hard way that, actually, equanimity within requires more than these sort of displays.

The Smell of Knowing

As we face the unforeseeable future, practicality and fear compel us to plan.

In order to meet the challenges of life, some forethought is required, and making every effort to secure our desires is a primal impulse.  However, attempts at fulfillment must reckon with a universal irony that renders most plotting futile.

The Importance of Balance Training

How’s your sense of balance? Do you avoid balancing exercises, or hate balance poses in yoga? It’s my experience that most people don’t have much confidence in their ability to balance, and that everyone definitely needs some type of balance training in their fitness routines.

What Do You Do For Fun?

“What do you do for fun?” That’s a pretty basic question, but I find that I have difficulty answering it. I’ve been asked it at least twice within the last couple of weeks and both times I struggled to find an answer.
