schedule of a day on easel

I know that you’re too busy to fit in your workouts! I hear it all the time, and I hear it from everybody. I hear it from moms, dads, business professionals, and I even hear it from other trainers and yoga teachers. You’re not alone, but today is your lucky day. I’m going to share with you my number one method that will help you keep your workout routine!

The Number One Way to Keep Your Workout Routine

I understand how busy you are. Everyone that I know is the same way. It’s our way of life, and I’m still figuring out how to take a step back from the busyness, but I do have a method that helps me keep my workout routine.

It’s not rocket science, and it will seem pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people don’t even think of this. It’s even possible that you haven’t thought of it before, so I’m going to tell you…

Schedule Your Workout!

You need to actually mark your workout time down on your calendar or schedule! Whatever you use to keep track of your day’s activities, is what you need to place your workout into. I’m a modern internet kind of guy, so I use my Google calendar. One of the first things that I do every morning is check my smartphone calendar so that I can see when my appointments are scheduled, and plan my day accordingly.

You’ll be more likely to complete the task as opposed to putting it off.

If you don’t use your smartphone calendar, a regular calendar works too. If you’re “old school” and still use a day planner, notebook, or scratch paper, then use whatever you’re used to using, but WRITE IT DOWN!

Actually physically write down or schedule your workouts!

  • Smartphone Calendar
  • Desktop Calendar
  • Email
  • Day Planner
  • Notebook
  • Scratch Paper

There’s something psychological about it when you wake up and see your to-do list. You’ll be more likely to complete the task as opposed to putting it off. Plan your workout!

When you look at your calendar in the morning and see that you’ve got a workout scheduled at 9:00am, 4:00pm, whenever, then you know what you’re going to do at that time.

When you know that you have to take the kids to school at 8:00am, then you take the kids to school at 8:00am. When you know that you have to be at work at 8:30am, then you get to work at 8:30am. Working out is the same way. When you put it on your calendar, then it becomes what you’re going to do at that time. Psychologically, your brain no longer considers it an option.

Maybe you can even make a game of it while you figure out how to keep your workout routine. Complete your workouts for an entire week, and reward yourself with some predetermined gift.

If you’re a psychologist and have any technical information about this phenomenon, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below. If you have your own experience with this, I’d love to hear about that too!

Extra Tip – Be Specific

In addition to scheduling your workout times, I also suggest that you be as specific as possible in regards to the type of workout or activity that you’ll be doing.

  • How long will you workout?
  • What type of workout?
  • Where will you workout?
  • What body parts will you train?
  • What are your personal goals for this specific workout?
