Clean living space is an asset to your health in more ways than one. When you take care of your environment at home, it’s an investment in your family’s mental health, and every swipe of your sponge works to reduce needless buildup, clutter, and stress. A clean, tidy space gives your physical health a boost, too, as you dispel the dust, pathogens, and particles that lurk in the air and on surfaces.

To have a truly clean home, however, take a look at more than just its appearance. The right cleaning products should contribute to a healthier, fresher home, but many mainstream cleaning products contain harmful chemicals and toxins that can actually do more harm than good. For a home that is clean in more ways than one, let’s take a look at why your shelves should be stocked with natural, organic cleaning products.

It’s Easier

Home upkeep and maintenance is hard work and, if you’re like most, you’ve had to learn as you go. A lot goes into a well-kept home, and along the way you’ve accumulated knowledge on what cleaning products work best in different situations, how to fold a fitted sheet, and how often to replace cleaning sponges and brushes. By now, you’re basically a professional.

Still, a dozen different “standard” cleaning products under the sink, all with different intended uses, overcomplicate what is already a lot to manage. Most organic cleaning products, especially DIY cleaning solutions, can be used for a variety of tasks. Vinegar, for example, is a great glass cleaner and works hard to remove mildew, mold, E. Coli, and Salmonella.

It’s Safer

Cleaning product manufacturers are not obligated to disclose what chemicals are used in their solutions, so you don’t always truly know just what you’re using to wipe down your kitchen table. Some of these products are also stamped with worrisome warning labels that caution against potential toxicity, flammability, and other safety concerns. In fact, the majority of calls to poison control are due to suspected ingestion of mainstream cleaning products.

Natural cleaning solutions are a safer choice for your home. Manufacturers will often opt for transparency and print the full list of ingredients on their labels, so you have peace of mind knowing what you’re using in your home. Organic products are safer for the planet, too. Production typically produces less waste, uses fewer harmful chemicals, and utilizes renewable resources, unlike most conventional cleaning products.

It’s Healthier

Conventional products are typically sprayed or applied straight from the bottle, and those chemicals rest in the air and on the surfaces. Just like the outdoors, pollution can accumulate indoors, too. Conventional cleaning products frequently contain volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which have been linked to a variety of health problems.

Organic cleaning products, however, are far less concerning. You don’t need to worry about harmful fumes or toxic chemicals in sensitive areas, which is especially important if you have children or pets around. Natural solutions are typically not carcinogenic, neurotoxic, or mutagenic and are free from the endocrine disruptors found in traditional solutions.

It’s Greener

Some of the more persistent and harmful ingredients in mainstream cleaning solutions get flushed down your drains and end up in the water supplies, polluting drinking water and irrigation systems, while threatening marine life and making their way into other animal habitats. Though water filtration systems are better than ever at catching some of these detrimental compounds, many of them still find their way through.

Early organic cleaning products that hit the market were more expensive and less effective than the ones available today, which is good news for both you and the planet. No longer do you need to choose between the thorough cleanliness historically found by using conventional cleaners and non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning options. Today, organic cleaning products are just as effective, if not more, at getting the job done. Organic cleaning products are a better choice for you, your family, your home, and the world around you.
