Many individuals are lost in the onslaught of nutrition do’s and don’ts. Thankfully there are some universal truths to be gathered out of all of the confusion.

Our magnificent bodies naturally crave harmony and balance amongst all systems: circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, reproductive, urinary, respiratory, and skeletal. Intuitively, our trillions of cells are working together for the wellbeing of the entire body. Detoxing is a systematic approach to help our body remove toxins stored in its body fat, tissues, and organs.

Have you ever considered detoxing or going on a cleanse? I used to be on a mission to lose weight and achieve “the perfect body” when I was younger. I had tried every fad diet, cleanse, and detox program I heard of. No one informed me that a cleanse or detox program was not meant to be a quick fix or band-aid solution to getting skinnier. Now that I have studied more than 100 dietary theories and experienced the benefits of a somewhat toxic-free lifestyle, I have come to understand what detoxing really means.

To define detox in my own terms, it simply means to nurture and cultivate lifestyle changes that reduce the exposure of toxins while supporting the body’s own abilities to improve digestion, absorption of nutrients, and elimination. Unfortunately, with the introduction of chemicals in our food, water, and air, we are constantly being bombarded with toxins. We can do our part to reduce our toxic load by consciously creating a lifestyle that enhances our ability to detox.

Detoxing is a lifelong tool that allows you to heal your body on every level. You can also lose weight with ease, reduce food cravings, increase your energy, stabilize mood swings, sleep better, and improve chronic problems including joint pain, digestive problems, headaches, eczema, psoriasis, memory problems, and brain fog.

Try a 10-21 day detox with these three tips:

• Plan & Prep – Before embarking on a detox, be sure to put together a collection of anti-inflammatory recipes that include fresh vegetables, clean proteins, nuts, seeds, good fats, and the occasional fruit. Plan out these recipes for the days you will be detoxing in an organized meal plan. Then, create the grocery lists so that you know exactly what you need to buy.

• Eat Organic, Whole, Plant-Based Foods – On a detox, it’s necessary to avoid processed foods, which are loaded with chemicals foreign to the body. Processed foods are hard to digest and will take the attention of your immune system and other systems needed for detoxing. Skip dairy, gluten, coffee, and alcohol, too. Have as much low oxalate vegetables and fruits as you would like. Include liver-supporting foods, such as dandelion greens, raw garlic, grapefruit, avocado, beets, carrots, artichokes, etc. You can also add spices such as turmeric, cumin, cayenne, and coriander, as they assist with digestion and detoxing. Chlorophyll has powerful health benefits – namely, it can bind to and remove toxic heavy metals such as mercury, can foster a flushing-out process, is blood-building and incredibly alkaline, increases red blood cell production, eases inflammation, and strengthens your immune system . On that note, add a few toxin-flushers like cilantro, parsley, and mint to your morning smoothie.

• Drink Water – Most of us are chronically dehydrated. During a detox, it is best to drink lots of filtered water to help flush out toxins. Try waking up to a warm cup of water with lemon juice squeezed into it.

Detoxing provides a scientifically designed plan to regain your health and discover how great you can feel in your body when you eliminate all the hard-to-digest junk food and eat real, whole foods instead. In 10-21 days of eating this way, you’ll realize how you no longer crave sugar or flour products, because you’ve helped restore your body to its original settings. Being addicted to food is a very real issue. It’s not a psychological problem, a moral failing, or lack of willpower. It’s a biological fact.
