How to Be More Engaged at Work

Here are four steps to feel more energized and satisfied on the job.

Are you engaged at work?

If not, don’t worry—87 percent of people worldwide report not feeling engaged on the job. Many of us don’t expect work to be something we enjoy; it’s called work for a reason, right? We feel it is normal to “check out” during the day and head home without feeling fulfilled or accomplished.

Greater Good Science Center's picture

This article originally appeared on Greater Good, the online magazine of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.

The Greater Good Science Center studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being, and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society.

Based at the University of California, Berkeley, the GGSC is unique in its commitment to both science and practice: Not only do we sponsor groundbreaking scientific research into social and emotional well-being, we help people apply this research to their personal and professional lives. Since 2001, we have been at the fore of a new scientific movement to explore the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior—the science of a meaningful life. And we have been without peer in our award-winning efforts to translate and disseminate this science to the public.

Productivity Habits: Debrief the Day

Debrief your day.

Take a few minutes at the end of each day to review what you worked on, what got accomplished, what still needs to be done.

Make a note in the appropriate places about calls to make, messages to return, and other action items requiring your attention.

This will allow you to leave the office behind when you leave the office for the day, without worrying about the proverbial other shoe dropping in your absence. It doesn’t have to take a long time, but it will save loads of time if you do it.

Your Work Habits Are Costing You

If you aren’t careful, your work habits could easily be costing you dearly.

Costing you what? Time. Money. Energy. Satisfaction. Results.

What do I mean?

Take a look at how you started your day.

Did you roll out of bed and immediately grab your smart phone to check email? Or did you get out of bed and take your body out for a walk or (insert your favorite exercise here)?

Did you eat breakfast? And I am not talking about the venti half caff soy no whip extra shot latte on the way to the office.

Stress in the Workplace and Your Sleep

Have you considered that before you even arrive at work, how you feel about work has already been determined? Our brain is the organ of personality, character, intelligence, and every decision we make. When our brains work right, we work right and when our brain is troubled, we are most likely to have trouble in our lives.

Thoughts trigger the human stress response and keep it going.

Thoughts repeated in habits and patterns create neuro-pathways that “carry” our thoughts to the body.
