The Incredible Shrinking Yoga Class

In the last twenty years, yoga in the west has gone from a guru-driven model to a market-driven model.

Decisions still often come from atop a pyramid. But now, the directives are based more on aggregated data than on the presumed authority of an ancient wisdom. One small manifestation of this turn can be found in the way that yoga classes have gotten progressively shorter. As yoga teachers are newly questioning old models for what and how they teach, industry mores also deserve examination.

New Year's Commitment

New Year’s resolutions fail. I know, because I’ve made them and none of them worked out. Why? Perhaps I didn’t want them bad enough. Or I forgot about them. We want change but we don’t want to expend the effort to affect that change.

Okay, I’m lazy. There. I said it. I’m lazy. I’d rather clean the kitchen, the bathroom, and shampoo the rugs than exercise. I hate it. It’s boring, it’s hard, and it’s exhausting. I don’t like the way it feels, I don’t like being hot and sweaty and sore, and I don’t like gasping for breath in public trying to walk up a hill.
